Web 1.0 — the read-only web (1990s)
The first web was a library, not a workshop. Pages were static HTML you could read but not touch: no logins, no comments, no feeds. Publishing meant knowing how to write a page and put it on a server. Most people were readers, and a small number were writers.
Web 2.0 — the social web (2000s)
Then the web learned to listen. Blogs, wikis, social networks and comment boxes turned readers into writers. The defining shift wasn't a new technology so much as a new default: anyone could publish. Content became a two-way street, and the platforms that captured that participation became the giants of the decade.
The mobile-first web (2010s)
The smartphone put the web in everyone's pocket, and design followed the glass. Layouts became responsive, interfaces became touch-first, and "apps and feeds" became how most people experienced the internet — always-on, notification-driven, and personalized.
The AI web (2020s)
Now the web is being reshaped again. Models generate and summarize the content we used to browse, assistants sit between us and the raw pages, and the interface is increasingly a conversation. It's early — but it rhymes with every prior jump: a new default quietly changes what the web is for.
